A look back to last week..........
George and Katie Hoy, well-known owners/Innkeepers of the fabulous Inn at Brandywine Falls in Northfield, within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, came to entertain us with their cooking and their books. George recently began eating strictly vegan (no meat, no cheese, no dairy, no eggs) and was anxious to show others this alternative healthy eating style. He made his Vegan Burgers, created from our market produce, and actually made up the recipe as he went along! Now that's a good cook! His recipe, as best as I could remember it, can be found on our recipes page.
He served them on hunks of Lucy's Sweet Surrender's New York rye bread with caraway seeds. Great marriage of flavors! He even let us in on his secret ingredient!
Assistant Chef Katie promised us all a taste of her famous Raspberry Sour Cream Coffee Cake (definitely NOT vegan!), and BOY! did she ever deliver!
It was beautiful to look at (that's it on the table in front of her) and just as wonderful to taste! There was a lot of demand, so the pieces were fairly small, but worth every bite! It's on our recipes page, also! For those of you who picked up a copy at the market, you will need the recipe for the raspberry butter. (That wasn't on the xeroxed copy we handed out.)
THANKS SO MUCH FOR COMING!!

THEN WE HAD LIVE MUSIC FOR THE FIRST TIME THIS SEASON!
A new acoustic trio, Left 2 Right, from Aurora, was here to entertain us all. Made up of (L to R) Rory Swift, former Twinsburg resident Jim Marzullo, and Keith Smith, the band featured country/folk style music. They even included a song I hadn't heard in years, Charlie on the MTA (He's the man who never returned!) Remember that one? I wasn't the only one singing along! From the approval of the appreciative crowd, they have a bright future! THANKS, GUYS!

. . . and if that wasn't enough excitement, then Chef Stewart of Blue Canyon Kitchen*Tavern warmed up our chilly afternoon with his Farmers' Market Fall Vegetable Soup. YUM! Hit the spot!
Recipe available on this site, as always.
Chef Stewart will be representing Twinsburg in an upcoming cook-off. GOOD LUCK! THANKS AGAIN FOR COMING!

TWO WEEKS AGO, we had a visit from Lisa Durbin's Daisy Girl Scout Troop on a field trip from Wilcox School! What fun!
I had to leave their photos in here another week. They were just too cute!

They had lots of fun on their market scavenger hunt! They even got to sample some yummy treats from our vendors!

Thanks for coming to the market girls!

( ... AND THE SUN CONTINUES TO SHINE ON US! AMAZING!)
Except for ONE week out of the whole season, this sentence held the "R" word away from us! That IS amazing!!!

Some observations from our twelfth week:

Folks seemed genuinely happy to be at the market this past week! There was a lot going on! It was fun!
The music really added to the festivities. Sure wish their schedules allowed them to come back this week. I tried. I begged. They can't.

Hershberger Farm had plenty of pumpkins and corn stalks all ready for folks to take home and start decorating for next month! It may seem early, but it's really not!
Did anyone else notice that Jim, of Gaelic Imports was dressed in an actual kilt last week? Wonder if the old rumor is true about what Scotsmen wear UNDER their kilts? I forgot to ask him!
I noticed Cossel Farm, Sirna's Farm & Market, The Other Side of the Fence and Lucy's Sweet Surrender were all as busy as usual last week. Such great vendors we have, don't we? They always bring us their best!
Seems like we just started, and here it is the end of the season already. Always a bittersweet time for me. Please indulge me in one last reminder ...... there's only 1 more market!!!!
If you don't buy it Thursday, you'll have to wait until next July!
September 25th will be your last chance to stock up on Storehouse Tea Company teas and pretty teapots, good things to have on hand for those chilly nights ahead. I've been meaning to thank Paula publicly for all the free samples of her yummy teas she has given out this summer. Thanks, Paula!
And how about Dew Bee Honey Farm's great handmade scented beeswax soaps? (As well as their honey! I know you won't last all winter without some honey for your tea! What if Winnie the Pooh comes to visit for the holidays? You'll want to have extra on hand!) Or their great beeswax lip balm for those wintry days ahead? Or those cute tree ornaments I noticed last week?
OR...... What about buying ahead for your Christmas gifts? I'm sure your loved ones would love a handmade glass beaded necklace from Lilyworks. Or one of their gorgeous glass balls to hang on their tree. (Or one for your own tree!) Speaking of jewelry, Lisa's Beauty and the Beads has lots, and I'm sure something will spark your interest at her well-stocked booth! Always reasonable prices, too! The Gift Gallery by Weaver Industries is another good place to buy your holiday gifts.....such pretty patterns of fabric used to make their placemats, tea cozies, and table runners. A tea cozy! Now there's a gift you don't see every day! And your favorite four-legged Browns' fan would love one of their doggie scarves to wear in the Dawg Pound! WOOF!
Oh, don't forget to buy a supply of homemade jellies and jams from Shari's Berries and Garden. If you miss Shari's booth, it's because she's turned herself into Bernie these last several weeks, and has been manning his Chaykowski Farm booth. A woman of many talents!
And I know you won't be able to go all winter without some of that award-winning maple syrup from Goodell Family Farm!
It never hurts to plan ahead!!!!!
I had quite a talk with Brian from Mini Moo Farm. This is him. Some of you may not have met him yet, or even SEEN him, as he spends most of his market hours with his head, if not his whole body, inside his freezer trailer! His meat has been a hugely popular addition to this year's market! I had to corral him after the market, just to get this picture! Anyway, what we talked about was #1, his desire to return to our little market next year, as he loves the friendliness of our customers (We love you, too, Brian!), and #2, how much we'll miss that good meat of his all winter! What will we do without those smoked pork chops, or gigantic chicken breasts, or popular beef jerky???? (Speaking of jerky, thanks, Brian and Kay, for all the free samples!) Well, he had good news! He plans to bring his meat to a storefront not too far from here, where all of our Twinsburg Farmers' Market customers, and his customers from the neighboring Hudson Farmers' Market, will be able to place orders, and pick them up at least once a week, all winter. I'll post the details on this site as he lets me know.

For those of you who don't know, Brian's farm is in Medina County. He raises the animals. A relative of his processes them for him. His cheese comes from a neighboring farm. Brian and his future in-laws, Kay and Al, who help run his booth, were all new to selling at farmers' markets before this season. They have learned a lot, I'm sure. It's been a pleasure to work with them and witness their success. A veteran, Brian really appreciated the new song Left 2 Right wrote, sang and dedicated to the military.

NOTE: You might just want to empty out some room in your freezer before Thursday, so you can stock up on all of Mini Moo's  many selections. That will keep you going a few weeks, anyway!

What a pleasure it has been to work with another brand new vendor, who didn't even have a clue, when we started the season, that she'd be doing this each week. I've been so proud to see the success of Twinsburg resident, Luann's Simpliciteas Cookies. Doug and I knew from the moment she brought her tea-infused cookies into our office for us to sample, that she would be a success. She also makes soap, and couldn't, at the time, decide which she should concentrate on. We suggested she try selling both, and let the customers lead her into a decision. I guess you have, as I haven't seen a bar of soap in her booth since her 1st week here! And she got her family involved, too. Son Michael is getting to be an expert at cutting up the free samples! Thank you for those, Luann! It's a good way to try several varieties, as she's always experimenting with new flavors! I do believe she's changed the name of her business, recently, too. I noticed her tags now read, Pigtails to Petit Fours. It wouldn't hurt to have her phone # or e-mail address on hand, when you need some holiday baking done.
Of course, she may have sworn off baking after this busy summer!?
Luann just proves that anyone can give this farmers' market thing a try. Maybe next year, YOU will want to make something and set up your own booth?
Wanted to say a great big "THANK YOU!" to all of my many teenage "Veggie Valet" helpers that have worked with/for me at the market this summer. What a great job these polite young people have done. They have carried your bags to your cars, set up tents, tables and chairs, and put them all away again, moved street barriers, served samples of our "Chef of the Week's" creations, and made sure our vendors had something cold to drink each week.
THANKS, RYAN, MAURIANNA, SANIM, CHANNING, ALEXANDRIA, KARA, FARREN, SHANNON, MATT, AUSTIN, ALEX, ZAK, and KEVIN!
I couldn't have done it without one young man in particular. Ryan has been with me from the beginning, when he answered my ad in the paper for help. He has done everything I've asked, and then some. If you see Ryan at the market this week, please give him a well-deserved pat on the back! THANKS, RYAN! YOU'RE THE BEST!

Don't forget . . . we have volunteer "Veggie Valets" available at each market to help you with your purchases. They can walk along with you as you shop, with a pull-wagon, or carry your bags and see to it that your purchases get safely to your cars. Why not avail yourself of this totally free service being offered? These teenagers are earning their high school community service hours by helping out at the market, and eagerly await the chance to carry your bags and help you out! But please, NO TIPPING ALLOWED.

*Just a note: Michael of Lucy's Sweet Surrender suggests that in order to avoid anyone being disappointed, why not call ahead to the bakery and place your order, and he will be sure to hold it for you. He can be reached at 216-752-0828.

Thanks for coming out and supporting our local farms.
The 2008 Farmers' Market continues THIS Thursday!
**please scroll down for photos from this year's market, including pictures of our newest 'Little Chefs'. . . I'm always on the lookout for new ones!

On a somber note, I regret to report the death of one of our original
vendors. Frank Goodell, husband of Virginia, father of Jay, and
father-in-law of Barb, who all have been at our market from the beginning
four years ago, passed away Monday, July 7th, after a short illness. The Goodell
Family Farm of Mantua, with their wonderful maple syrup and maple products,
has been a fixture at many local markets, as well as the Mantua Potato
Festival and the Geauga County Fair .
Mr. Goodell was a judge for the maple products at the fair for over sixty
years. Our sincerest sympathies go out to the Goodell Family, and we will
surely miss Frank at our market. God rest his soul.

This Thursday, Church Street will once again transform into our bustling, canopy-filled market!
YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS OUT ON THIS MUCH FUN, DO YOU?   PLAN ON ATTENDING!   TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!

Oh, such pretty gifts for some lucky recipient. Many local people with disabilities work here in Twinsburg at the Gift Gallery by Weaver Industries workshop on Ravenna Rd. You can purchase their wares at the market, or at their store giftshop.

Craig explains how to prepare his homemade Italian sausage. Some of Sirna's Farm & Market's homemade horseradish pickles can be seen in the background.
They usually have free samples, too!
